Looking Behind ... Moving Forward

Besigye's supporters hoped for change
The voting has ended.  Winners announced. Social media has been resumed.  No civil war has erupted.  Though shots have been fired and tear gas used.  Some people are still boiling with anger.  Accusations have been unleashed.

God has revealed the results of the referendum of the Uganda voting populace. The winner of the race between peace and change has emerged.  Though suspicion reigns about the fairness of it all.

So many were tired of the "old man" ruling Uganda for the past 30 years and were yearning for CHANGE.

The older generation still had vivid memories of a war torn nation before the "old man" brought peace and development.  They desired continued PEACE.

It seems the contender, Besigye, is not God's plan to bring change to Uganda.

I believe God wants change for Uganda and I believe I know His strategy.

Sunday morning, the preacher of the day gave an passionate message from Psalm 46.  With an emphasis on verse 10 ...
“Be still, and know that I am God!  I will be honored by every nation.  I will be honored throughout the world.”
The political crisis here in Uganda motivated many foreigners to leave the country in order to watch the consequences of the election from a distance.  The irregularities relative to international standards for democratic nations brought questions from near and far.

And it all gave me pause to reflect on change.  Many were more than ready for a change.  Though the understanding of what kind of change was too elementary.

Personally?  I have no confidence in the kind of change Uganda needs ever coming from a political figurehead.  Our neighbor to the west, Congo, had the same passion for change not that long ago. They, too, were tired of the one who had stayed too long.  And their election brought them a new president.  But, the change they had in mind was not the change they have lived with.  Things got worse, not better.  Faith in a political leader to bring change seems misplaced.

God does use leaders to be catalysts for either positive or negative change.  But I believe His change agents do not rely on titles and positions. They are the common people of a nation who love and serve an uncommon God.  They are called the sons of God.

The book of Romans, in the Bible, says that all of creation is crying out for the manifestation of the sons of God.  Creation groans for the revealing of the sons of God.  The sons of God have been given authority from the King of kings and Lord of lords to be the change agents ... the like of which the world has never seen since the original disciples of Jesus turned the world upside down.

Yes, the Kingdom of God is an upside down Kingdom.  People from both genders, connected to God's eternal family through the Cross of His Firstborn Son ... those people are in this world as the real change agents.

Paul, the Apostle of Jesus Christ, wrote that the plan of God involved a secret or mystery that had been hidden for centuries and generations.  But, the secret has now been uncovered.  And, what was that secret?  It was "Christ in you, the hope of glory."

Change comes to nations as each believer in Christ believes in the authority given to them by God. And they confidently bring His love, grace, and presence to people desperately needing those things to live fully alive.  People for every walk of life, administering the love of God to people divinely placed within their sphere of influence.

That's my brief look behind at the concluding Election Day consequences ... and my desire to motivate the next generation to move forward as the change agents God intends them to be.  To freely live in the peace of God's presence and to freely love those whose hope was in whichever candidate.  But, whose loyalty belongs to the greatest Agent of Change the world has ever known.

There is no King like this king.

  1. Paul this is a masterpiece. The best I've ever heard regarding elections. I think it's not only for Uganda elections but for us here in the states as well.
Thanks, God help us all. Love you, keep on writing,
