Before & After

There is a deep hunger inside the heart of humanity to experience and witness transformation. The evidence is everywhere. Take a look at the number of television programs featuring renovations and makeovers. It's easy to find movies that tell stories of rags to riches. Sports fans love the stories of athletes who, against all odds, perform at the highest level. Transformation ... it's delightful to witness. Weight loss. Restored classic cars. Before and after photos. My wife and I moved to Uganda in 2005 convinced God called us there ... but without any missionary template. We possessed a deep and abiding love for the people of the nation but not much more than this strong belief that God had given us this love and we needed to live among them and faithfully express His heart for them. Last week I had a phone call from my younger brother. He built homes in northern Oregon for more than three decades before moving to an eastern state. He is approaching the threshold of 70 years. However, his wife recently told him, "I think you have one more house in you." I am seven years older than my brother. It's Unbelievable!

Yes. It is unbelievable. But, it is true. Have you got time for a short story from a football fan? Not soccer, but American football? Good! Let me share it with you if you haven't already heard. True story ... but unbelievable! For those of you who are unfamiliar with the process professional football teams go through to upgrade their teams with better players, it is a mechanism called the draft. The most outstanding players from colleges as well as others are put in a pool and then each team has the opportunity to draft the players they think will benefit their season when it is their turn to choose. The National Football Team is composed of 32 teams that are allowed to have 53 active players for each game played during their season. Not all players taken, even toward the top, make these rosters. Some are great and expensive disappointments. But, as they say, there is always next year. There are seven rounds each year in the draft, meaning that 259 players are chosen each year. An
