NGM Update 187 Small Town USA - Second Installment

True Love
October 15, 2010

Our guest blogger is the author of this second installment of a three part blog on Fairview, Oklahoma.  Caige Craighead was crowned Homecoming Queen one week ago from today.  She wrote the follow as an essay for her senior English class and shared it with me ... saying she thought I might like it.  I did and received permission to share it with all of you.

And  now these three remain: faith, hope, and love.  But the greatest of these is love.

This quote from the Bible explains how love connects people to one another in ways that are unfathomable. Love is what keeps us going at the end of the day. It also expresses that without love this world would be full of misery and unhappiness. Love is truly the best value that anyone could have.

Love connects people in ways that we as human beings cannot comprehend. Albert Einstein once said, “How on earth are you ever going to explain in terms of chemistry and physics so important a biological phenomenon as first love?” Love is the one thing that most people value above everything else. Love attaches people’s hearts and souls together to the point that when one person suffers the other suffers as well. The majority of people however don’t realize how much love truly means to them until they lose it. Love connects all people together in certain ways. For example, there is the love that a person can feel for a stranger. This type of love is a way of showing compassion towards one another. Just by giving spare change to a person asking for money so they can buy food that day is a gesture of love. Love is what drives us to do our best.

Love is what keeps people going. It can be a great motivator. Some people say that they are the best themselves they can be when they are around the one they love the most. When a person feels love, they are more willing to do things that they normally wouldn’t do. People would do anything and go completely out of their way to make the person they love happy. For example, this summer I went to Uganda, Africa for ten days. While I was there, I fell in love with the people and the culture. The people in Uganda know how to love each other with all of their hearts. They don’t hold anything back when it comes to loving someone. Whether they are showing love for people or for God, they give it everything they have. The people of Uganda taught me that I can’t be afraid of getting hurt when it comes to love. I have to give that person everything I have without hesitating. A few children specifically taught me this lesson. Two boys and a young girl took me in as family in Uganda. The young girl is four-years-old and the boys are around the ages of six and nine. Even though we could not communicate because of the language barrier, still we knew that we loved each other very deeply. Another example is parents would do absolutely anything for their children. Parents pinch pennies so they can take their kids on a fantasy vacation or buy them that expensive toy they have been begging to get. Grandchildren help their grandparents clean house or cook supper even if it’s not what they want to do because they love them with all their hearts. Then there are couples who make the long distance relationship work because they know that they need the other one in their life. Love is the main inspiration for everything that people do.

St. Augustine once said, “What does love look like? It has the hands to help others. It has the feet to hasten to the poor and needy. It has eyes to see misery and want. It has the ears to hear the sighs and sorrows of men. That is what love looks like.” This quote describes what the word love truly means. Love is what makes the world go round. Without love, the world would be a very dreary place. People would walk around in a bad mood longing for something more in their lives to make them feel whole. Life would no longer have any meaning. Showing compassion for another person gives meaning to life. The people in Uganda thrive on love. Without love they would have nothing. They would no longer be the happy people I came to love. Love gives people a reason to live. It is what keeps the people of Uganda happy and well. For them, love is everything they need. Love also helps the conscience tug at a person’s heart strings telling them right from wrong. Love is the ultimate goal to reach in life.

Love is what makes people tick. It connects people in ways that are unimaginable. Love makes people do things that would have otherwise never done. Whether people go half way across a state to see their loved one or save money for months, they do whatever it takes to please the ones they love. It encourages people to be the best they can be. It is what keeps the world at what peace we have now. Without love this world would dull and bleak. Love is the most precious things that a person can have.
