Why Humans Clamor For A King

Like it (many will) or not (many will not), the United States will swear in a new president on January 20, 2021.

Though the national election in Uganda is scheduled for January 14, 2021, there is a movement gaining momentum to delay the election for three years ... with a change in the constitution that allows the incumbent to remain in power.

My life over the past 15 years has been shared between these two nations and governments.  What I have noticed in those years is an increase in hatred, vitriol, division, intolerance, and despise as previous values have surrendered to individuals' loyalty to human leaders.

All of this devotion to human leaders prompts me to think about the desire the Jewish people had for a king back in the days of Solomon and David.  Most people think the nation hungered for a king because they wanted to be like the surrounding nations who had a king.  I believe that is one reason ... on the surface.  But I also believe that the core motivation was a result of a lack of trust in God.

I'm of the opinion that loyalty to human personalities in positions of leadership is the consequence of dissatisfaction with or lack of trust in Jesus.  Let me summarize.

All humans want a king.

This need is an expression of the condition of mankind.  Whether people like it or not the truth is that all men are sinners.  We share this condition in common.  Because of this condition, we require someone who can do something about it.  Someone who can help make things better.

The sin of man is the bottom line for all the evils and injustices of the world.  It is natural to want to find someone who can improve the condition.  Someone whose policies will make life more manageable and navigate us profitably through our existence.

Of course, there will be some who deny they are sinners.  Personally, I confirm this conviction for two reasons.  One, the Bible clearly established the fact that all human beings are sinners ... and I happen to believe the Bible is the actual Word of God.  Secondly, I only need to look at my personal life to see my attitudes, choices, and behaviors embracing this reality.

All humans need a PERFECT king.

History confirms that there have been good, bad, and ugly leaders at all levels.  What is common among all of them is that none of them were perfect.  As capable as they may be, leaders are broken and fallen just like the rest of us.

Those we admire and hope in, come and do the best they can, but when they are gone there is little that has changed. Throughout history, this has been the struggle of mankind.  Though many have thought America has made progress against racism we still find ourselves in the grip of its destruction.

The human condition demands that people need a perfect king to really make things better.  The reason for the Old Testament is to trace a pathway of failure in human leaders to the coming of a man who can and does rescue people from their desperate predicament.

Jesus Christ IS that Perfect King.

A leading zealot of New Testament, after meeting Jesus, declared that Jesus came into the world to save sinners of which he felt he was the worst.

Jesus is the hope of the world.  Many will reject Him.  Some will continue to put faith in flawed humans.  But miraculous change and resolve come to those who put their faith in Him.

... which he will display at the proper time ... he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and the Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see.  To him be honor and eternal dominion.  Amen.  (1 Timothy 4:15-16)

The mission of Next Generation Ministries has never changed.  While we love the people of Uganda on behalf of God through medical and educational care, our mission is to connect as many people to Jesus the King as possible.  As we celebrate the coming of God to Earth as a man we confirm that He is the only King worthy of our undivided devotion.  Our loyalty is to Jesus the King and to His Kingdom.  We pray that His rule and reign in the lives of humans will come ...
